Madison, WI - Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, in partnership with the CAP Services Family Crisis Center and Waupaca County District Attorney Kat Turner, is raising awareness about the rights available to crime victims in Wisconsin through a compelling display of silhouettes at the Waupaca County Courthouse. The display is available to view from August 26-September 9, with a kickoff event on August 26.
Attendees will encounter an interactive showcase of red-painted silhouettes symbolizing individuals affected by crime. Each silhouette will feature one of the rights granted by Wisconsin's Crime Victims' Rights constitutional amendment, also known as Marsy's Law. Additionally, the silhouettes will be equipped with QR codes linking individuals to the websites for Marsy's Law for Wisconsin's, the CAP Services Family Crisis Center, and the Wisconsin Office of Crime Victims' Services for further details.
"The silhouette exhibit highlights the experiences of crime victims and survivors, who may be individuals from our daily lives - our neighbors, coworkers, or acquaintances," mentioned Nela Kalpic, State Director of Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin. "Through this display, we aim to raise awareness about the rights safeguarded for crime victims under Marsy’s Law and the accessible support services available through the District Attorney’s office and service providers like the CAP Services’ Family Crisis Center."
“Both as the Waupaca County District Attorney and as a citizen of Waupaca County, myself and the staff of my office are each dedicated to providing crime victims with the dignity they deserve, as mandated by our state constitution," stated Kat Turner, the DA of Waupaca County. “Our goal with the silhouette display is to educate the public on their rights under Marsy’s Law and the victim services offered by our office and in those available in our community.”
“The Family Crisis Center is dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,” stated Audelina Sanchez, Executive Director of the Family Crisis Center. “We are glad to be a part of the silhouette display and hope to empower and educate, showcasing the resources available to victims in Waupaca, Waushara, and Portage Counties.”
The silhouettes will be placed inside the Waupaca County Courthouse. Each silhouette will display a specific right from Marsy’s Law, written in language easily understood by victims who may not have prior engagement with the criminal justice system. Marsy’s Law rights highlighted on the silhouettes include: right to privacy, right to notice, right to confer, right to be present, right to be heard, right to know your rights, right to restitution, and right to enforce your rights.
