Kewaunee, WI - Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, in partnership with the Violence Intervention Project and Kewaunee County District Attorney Andrew P. Naze, is raising awareness about the rights available to crime victims in Wisconsin through a compelling display of silhouettes at the Kewaunee County Courthouse. The display is available to view from May 30-June 14, with a kickoff event planned for Thursday, May 30.
Attendees will experience an interactive display of red-painted silhouettes that represent someone impacted by crime. Each silhouette will have one of the rights provided by Wisconsin’s Crime Victims’ Rights constitutional amendment known as Marsy’s Law written on it. The silhouettes will also have QR codes on them that will connect people to the websites for Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, Violence Intervention Project and the Wisconsin Office of Crime Victims’ Services for additional information.
“The silhouette imagery acts as a powerful reminder that victims and survivors of crime could be right beside us, maybe as our neighbors, colleagues, or friends,” expressed Nela Kalpic, State Director for Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin. “With this exhibit, our goal is to shine a light on victims’ rights and support services, urging the broader community to recognize and stand by those impacted by crime.”
“The Kewaunee County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to ensuring crime victims receive the dignity and respect they deserve. We hope the silhouette display will serve as a valuable educational resource on Marsy’s Law and the victim support services offered in Kewaunee County,” stated Andrew Naze, District Attorney of Kewaunee County.
The silhouettes will be placed inside the Kewaunee County Courthouse. Each silhouette will display a specific right from Marsy’s Law, written in language easily understood by victims who may not have prior engagement with the criminal justice system. Marsy’s Law rights highlighted on the silhouettes include: right to privacy, right to notice, right to confer, right to be present, right to be heard, right to know your rights, right to restitution, and right to enforce your rights.
The event begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May. 30 inside the Kewaunee County Courthouse located at 613 Dodge St. The silhouettes will remain in the Courthouse until 4 p.m., Friday, June 14.
